Micro-marbles

Today I took the bike to Gold's Gym to work out. It extended my streak of consecutive months with at least one motorcycle ride in central Maine to 25. But it was a bit of an ignominious start to the 2011 riding season. I pulled the bike from the garage and let it warm up on the driveway as I donned my helmet, gloves and jacket. I slowly proceeded down my steep, dry, ice-free driveway. As I began to pick up speed, less than 5 mph, I squeezed the front brake. The next thing I knew I was on my left side at the bottom of the driveway. My pride is deeply hurt, my shoulder is a little bit sore, and the pannier lid on my bike is scratched. Other than that, all is well. There must be a thin layer of dust or silt that served as micro-marbles on which to slide.
So learn from my (bad) example. Be careful out there until the roads are cleaned up.
